Basil Pure Essential Oil Profile

Basil (Ocimum basilicum, Lamiaceae) is a stimulating oil with an interesting chemical composition.   Its methyl ether content make it the oil of choice for an anti-stress blend.  Basil sweet is the most common oil.  This oil contains 15% monoterpenes, 50% alcohols, often 25% phenols, phenolic ethers but can contain 5% or less methyl chavicol. 


General description - Warming, toning, clarifying, uplifting, energising. 

Basil eugenol (Ocimum basilicum eugenoliferum) contains some 60% phenols, phenolic ethers, Basil Exotic reunion (Ocimum basilicum) contains some 90% phenols, phenolic ethers.

Basil blends well with L. angustifolia making a stimulating, calming anti stress blend base.

Nervous – antispasmodic (slight)
Endocrine – hormone like
Circulation and immune – antiviral, bactericidal (slight), decongestant
Skin and muscle tissues – anti-inflammatory, antiseptic
Respiratory – antiviral, bactericidal (slight)
Digestive – anti-inflammatory
Urinary - decongestant
Contains: linalyl acetate, fenchl acetate, methyl cinnamate – b-caryophyllene – 1, 8 cineole – a-pinene, b-pinene, y-terpinene, limonene, cis-ocimene, p-cymene, camphene – terpinen-4-ol, a-terpineol, linalool, citronellol, geraniol – eugenol, methyl chavicol (estragole), methyl eugenol

Safety –  Only Basil with a methyl chavicol content of less than 5% should be used in aromatherapy.

Students note.
Choose basil for an anti stress blend to clear the head and relieve intellectual fatigue.
Five chemotypes of Basil have been identified however the oil of commerce is Basil sweet. Care though must be taken to use an oil of low methl chavicol content.
